Highlights:

  • Weibo's user base remains relatively stable, and its active development of AI-generated content (AIGC) technology is expected to sustain its competitive edge. While significant growth may be challenging in the short term, its business performance remains steady.
  • Weibo maintains exceptionally low leverage and a high interest coverage ratio, reflecting its strong debt repayment capacity and minimal overall credit risk.
  • Weibo's bonds offer a favourable investment-grade option with relatively high yields. Its 2030 USD bonds currently yielding at 5.4%.

In our previous article "Idea of the Week: Weibo—An Investment-grade Social Media Platform", we highlighted Weibo's position as one of China's leading social media platforms. Its public interaction model and large user base have helped it maintain a stable market position.

Two years later, can Weibo live up to our previous analysis and expectations, maintaining stable operational performance and strong credit health? With the rapid rise of short-video platforms often emphasized in the market, will they "crush" Weibo? This article provides an in-depth exploration of Weibo and its bonds.

Stable User Base and Competitive Edge Through AIGC Technology

As shown in Chart 1, Weibo boasts a large and relatively stable active user base. Its Monthly Active Users (MAU) and Daily Active Users (DAU) have remained consistent over the past few years. As of the end of September 2024, MAU reached 598 million, while DAU stood at 257 million. Weibo continues to hold a strong position among social media platforms, particularly in areas like real-time information sharing, trending topic discussions, and celebrity interactions, which attract significant user engagement. This reflects the platform's strong network effects, a key competitive moat for the company.

Chart 1: Active User Numbers on Weibo

The slowdown in user base growth can primarily be attributed to the rapid rise of short-video platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou. These platforms, with their visually engaging content and advanced social interaction features, have captured a large portion of younger users. In comparison, Weibo’s content, which is primarily text and image based, falls short in terms of entertainment value and interactivity, reducing its appeal to younger demographics. Additionally, intensified market competition has led to a shift in advertising budgets from brands, with more allocation toward these emerging platforms, further constraining Weibo’s growth potential. As a result, Weibo is unlikely to achieve significant user growth in the short term.

To address the increasingly fierce competition, Weibo has actively developed generative artificial intelligence (AIGC) technology, leveraging AI models to automate content creation. This technology not only improves content production efficiency but also provides users with a more personalized experience, thereby enhancing user stickiness. For instance, Weibo introduced an "AI Celebrity Emotional Chat" feature, allowing users to simulate interactions with celebrities through an AI assistant. This innovation has increased the platform’s entertainment value and user engagement, helping to activate its existing user base while attracting younger audiences. We believe these efforts will help reduce user churn and sustain Weibo’s competitive edge in the long run.

Limited Short-Term Growth, Stable Business Performance

In the first nine months of 2024 (see Chart 2), Weibo's total revenue remained steady at USD $1.3 billion, roughly unchanged YoY. Advertising revenue accounted for 86% of total revenue, while value-added services (such as membership subscriptions and online game services) contributed 14%. Meanwhile, the operating profit margin increased by 200 basis points YoY to 29%. Although the company’s revenue growth has been limited, its strong cost management and operational efficiency have allowed it to maintain solid profitability.

Chart 2: Weibo’s Revenue and Operating Profit

It is worth noting that Weibo continues to face certain challenges, including intense competition in the advertising market and a slowdown in the domestic economy. These factors exert pressure on the company’s advertising business. While significant revenue growth may be difficult to achieve in the short term, we believe Weibo’s overall business performance will remain stable.

Weibo's active user base has remained relatively stable, with Alibaba being one of its key advertising clients, contributing significantly to its advertising revenue. At the same time, the growth of Weibo's user base largely depends on the addition of new users, which is primarily driven by its collaboration with smartphone manufacturers. Through the pre-installation of the Weibo app on new smartphones, this partnership also helps enhance its brand exposure to some extent. With these stable user foundations and advertising revenue streams, Weibo's future performance is likely to remain at its current level, providing a steady cash flow.

Extremely Low Leverage, Minimal Credit Risk

As of the end of September 2024, Weibo held total cash of approximately $1.2 billion and short-term investments of about $990 million. Combined, these amounts exceed its total debt level. The Total Debt/EBIT and Net Gearing Ratio stood at 4.9x and 18%, respectively, reflecting the company’s extremely low leverage and solid credit profile.

We estimate that Weibo’s interest coverage ratio for the first nine months of 2024 is 5.8x, indicating that its profit levels are more than sufficient to cover interest expenses, even in a high financing cost environment. This highlights the company’s robust debt repayment capacity.

Overall, Weibo’s debt level remains low, and its stable profitability ensures that the company’s overall credit risk is minimal.

Weibo’s 2030 USD Bond offer higher yield among investment grade option, yielding at 5.4%

Currently, our platform offers a Weibo USD bond, "WB 3.375% 08Jul2030 Corp (USD)", with both the issuer and bond credit ratings at BBB / BBB (S&P / Fitch), classifying as investment-grade. This bond provides a yield to maturity of 5.4%, making it an attractive choice for investors seeking higher yields within the investment-grade category.

As shown in Table 2, compared to Meituan’s bonds with a similar credit rating, Weibo’s bonds offer an additional 20–30 basis points in yield. Considering that Weibo also has stable cash flows and a solid financial position, we believe the credit risks of both issuers are similarly low. This makes Weibo’s bonds a compelling investment option for those seeking steady returns.

Related Risk

Weibo’s parent company, Sina, maintains strong influence over Weibo’s business decisions. This close relationship means that Weibo's policies are often shaped by Sina’s decisions, which could potentially undermine Weibo’s operational and financial performance.

If the Chinese government further tightens regulations on the internet industry, particularly in areas such as content moderation, data security, or compliance. Weibo’s operating environment could be adversely impacted.

Weibo faces fierce competition from short-video platforms and other social media competitors. If Weibo fails to innovate technologically or improve user experience to maintain its competitive edge, its market position could weaken further.

Although the Chinese government introduced economic stimulus measures in September this year to promote consumption and domestic demand, the effects will take time to materialize. Currently, the domestic economy faces a quasi-deflationary environment, increasing consumer sensitivity to product prices. This is particularly evident in industries like luxury goods and cosmetics, where clients have scaled back advertising budgets. This trend has indirectly constrained Weibo’s ability to grow its advertising revenue.

Conclusion

Weibo's user base remains relatively stable, and its active development of AI-generated content (AIGC) technology is expected to sustain its competitive edge. While significant growth may be challenging in the short term, its business performance remains steady.

Weibo maintains exceptionally low leverage and a high interest coverage ratio, reflecting its strong debt repayment capacity and minimal overall credit risk.

Weibo's bonds offer a favourable investment-grade option with relatively high yields. Its 2030 USD bonds currently yielding at 5.4%.
